Game Reports

10-13-2011

On Thursday night the Stars were looking to avenge the 6-1 beating the Red Wings exacted upon them last week. Tonight the Stars had defense specialist John Van Rijn back in the line-up, but were minus the emerging offensive presence of Ken Howell. The Red wings were playing with a short bench, so Devon Lent was added as a guest player to their line-up.

The Stars opened the scoring early with team captain Gerry Vidal picking up his 1st goal of the season. A short time later Doug Roy would get his 1st goal of the season on a tip in of a Dan Jenkins shot. The Stars played very stingy defense all night, and when tested Andrew came up with the glove and blocker big time.

The Second period saw Jim Dinger picking up a goal, with Doug and Henry getting the helpers, unfortunately Jim also picked up a penalty on the goal as his momentum carried him into the Red Wings tender(and former Stars goalie) Tom Harrison, so off to the “Sin Bin “ for Jim . While sitting feeling much shame, for his actions the Red Wings poked in a Power Play Goal. That set the final margin at 3-1 . The Stars next take to the ice on Thursday the 20th against the Sharks.

10-2-2011

Upon arrival at the Lexington Ice Center on Sunday night, all teams were advised that rink 2 was not ready for play, so the games were again played in the main rink. The game didn’t turn out in the favor of the Stars on this night, as they fall to the Red Wings and their swarming Offense by a score of 6-1.
The  only scoring from the Stars came in the form of a goal off the stick of center Ken Howell, with Jim Dinger picking up the assist. The team in Black was able to kill off 3 short-handed situations, as the whistles were also against the Stars tonight. The Red Wings also killed off their penalty.
The Stars are next in action on Sunday  the 9th at 7:15pm. The early start means a trip to O’Charlies after the game.

9-19-2011
Monday  night  hockey this week featured a playoff style game between the Stars and the Sharks, with plenty of action at both ends of the ice. The crowd (est. 5) were kept on the edge of their seats all night . In the end the Stars come out the victors, benefiting from a Ken Howell goal in the 1st period.
The lone 1st period goal would be all that the Stars needed to secure the win, combined with their tight defense, and back-checking, they managed to keep the pressure off goalie Bane. Andrew came up large when called upon making some fine saves in net.
With the bye-week upon them the Stars are off for the next 13 days, they will hit the ice on Sunday October 2 to face the Red Wings.

9-9-2011
Wednesday nights’ matchup set the Stars against the Rangers in A midweek matchup. As with most weekday matchups the rosters are not always full, and this Wednesday tilt was no exception. The Rangers were skating without their Captain Kirby Rhodus, and the Stars were minus their stalwart defenseman John Van Rijn as well as Dave Henderson.
Both teams were evenly matched even though the final score indicates otherwise. The Rangers scored first, even though the Stars were keeping pressure on the opponents net. “We just couldn’t seem to get that one little bounce” said Stars assistant captain Tim Bator. Truth be told the post was very unkind to the Stars as they drew iron on multiple occasions.
The black shirts finally broke through with a goal off the Stick of Dan Jenkins ( Bator, Ueber), as the team worked the puck in deep and fed him on the doorstep. But try as they might, (down 3-1 with 2 minutes remaining ), Captain Vidal called for Goalie Andrew to come to the bench in favor of the extra attacker. The strategy was producing quality shots on net, but still no dice. Unfortunately for the Stars the Rangers got the puck with 20 seconds remaining and netted an empty netter, to set the final tally at 4-1 Rangers.
Next up is another Wednesday night match, a 7:15 start against the Caps.

04-15-2011
The Stars Finished the regular season on a high note, beating the Caps in a tightly constested battle. After falling behind early, and with the score 1-0 after the 1st period, the black shirts answered back with a goal in the opening minutes of teh 2nd period. Jack took a pass from Bob and worked a little magic, slipping the puck into the back of the Caps net. The 2nd Period would end with the score tied 1-1. Then Bob would pick up his 2nd point of the game by taking a pass from Doug and sliding the biscuit behind the Caps net minder. And that would do it for the scoring on this night. Now comes the test, as the Stars face the Pens in the 7:15 game to determine who moves on to the championship game on Wednesday night. It has been an exciting season so far and Sunday night's game should be another in a string of great games.

4-6-2011
With one game remaining. the Stars are sitting in 1st place in the “C” League, although the Sharks also have one game remaining. The Stars hold their destiny in their own hands, the game with the Caps could decide which team gets the #1 seed in the play-offs. The Sharks play the Rangers in their final game, and trailing the Stars by 1 point in the standings, means it is too close to call. This past Sunday night the Stars faced off against the Rangers for the second time in a week, there were less fire-works this time around, but still some troublesome penalties. Aside from that a good game none the less, Emilee opened the scoring on a pass from Ken, Doug. Bob and Gerry would also add to their point totals. Ken picks up 2 assists and Dan also with 2 and Doug with an assist to go with his goal.

The final regular season game will be on Wednesday night April 13 at 7:15, please come out and root the Stars to Victory!

3-28-2011
Fresh back from his Weekend Warriors camp Ken Howell scored 5 goals to lead the Stars to a 8-4 defeat of the Rangers on Sunday night. Ryan Hoots opened the nights activities with a goal on a sweet pass from Doug Roy, then Ken would get the 1st of his 5 goals on a pass from team captain Vidal. Hootsy and Bob then connected for the 3rd goal, and Ken kicked it into high gear netting 3 in a row. First from Bob and Tim, the unassisted goal and then he and Jack hooked. . Jack then took a pass from Bob and deposited it in the Rangers net, and Ken rounded out his night after taking a pass from Jack.

A few penalties were handed out as well to both teams, we will leave it at that. As of this posting the Stars sit in 1st place in the standings with 3 games to play.

The next of which is Wednesday against the Red Wings at 7:15. See you there

3-18-20
After Wednesday night’s game between the Red Wings. Wayne the rink maintenance man is busy replacing the hinge on the visitor’s penalty box door.   The Stars were whistled for a club record 8 penalties, sending 7 different players to the sin bin.   The one shocker was team penalty leader Gerry Vidal stayed on the good side of the lay in this one.
Tim opened the scoring with a goal on a pass from John, and shortly after they reversed the scoring with John scoring a power play goal on a pass from Tim. Yes Ethel the Sharks were actually called for the 1st 2 penalties of the game.   Tim scored his 2nd goal of the game on the 2nd penalty to the Sharks, this time on a pass from Bob. Then the march to the box began for the Stars .The black shirts were able to kill off several 5 on 3's and in the end the Stars prevail and pull out a 3-2 victory against the leagues number 1 team. Next up a very late night game with the Pens.

3-14-2011
Before I go any further , I wish to say thank you to our fans . We have a loyal following, night in and night out the Hoots , and the Herbolichs’ and the Howells. Last night the Van Rijns were in town visiting and came out to watch the team in action. Welcome to Lexington.
Well back in action after a 12 day break. the Stars were looking to make up some ground as the lay-off allowed for the Red Wings and Pens to pass them in the standings. The stars opened the scoring on a goal by Tim Bator from Dave Horvath. and Ryan Hoots. The eventual game winning goal was scored by Ryan , with the assist Tim . Tim had the big night on Sunday scoring 2 goals and notching 2 assists for a 4 point night. Ken. Dan. and Ryan all had 2 point nights . each scoring a goal and an assist. John scores a goal (just so he can say the family saw him do something), Jesse and Dave Horvath each got credited with assists.
But really the defense played tough all night, keeping the big Ranger scorers in check . Tom was great in net again
The Stars now sit in a 3 way tie for 2nd place. Going up against the 1st place Sharks on Wednesday night.

3-2-201 1
The Hex has struck again, for whatever reason the Stars cent seem to get by the Caps. . A full bench and plenty of fire power were on hand Tuesday night as the Stars and Caps squared off.    The Lighting problem of Sunday night had been resolved so both teams were bathed in lights, but it was the Caps who came out on top this night. The lone goal for the black shirts came in the early minutes of the contest as Ryan Hoots picked up his 4th goal of the season.  On a pass from Team captain Vidal.   But the Caps staunch a defense and potent offense put an 8 spot on the scoreboard.
The Stars are now off till Sunday March 13th when they face the Rangers at 8:30.

2-27-2011
Darkness fell upon the Lexington Ice Center on Sunday night as one of the strings of lights in the rink had a blown ballast, causing half of the rink to be dark. This did little to dissuade the 2 teams from squaring off for the 7th time this season .With the teams tied going into the match-up with 32 points and their records at 3-3 on the season this game is important for both squads.
Both goalies were consulted and determined that the shadows wouldn’t bother them it was decided to play on rather then postponing for another date. So Let’s play hockey!
On the face off after the 1st line change Doug Roy won the draw back to defenseman Vidal who found a streaking Dave Horvath on the left side half boards. Dave wasted no time in sliding the puck into the back of the Red Wings cage, to put t1 Stars on the board 1st.
After goals By Doc, Dan and Ken , and 2 by the Wings the score would stand at 4-2 for the 1st intermission. The most entertaining goal of the night though goes to Youngster Hoots . who after grabbing the rebound pass from Vidal late in the game. and depositing it into the net , went to do celebratory move and had his skate blade break during the move. This caught him off guard and as is usually the case when the skate breaks the wearer usually has a difficult time of standing . He was helped off the ice by his teammates as time was expiring in the game. He will now be working on a replacement blade for Tuesdays game.
Lucky number 7 on this night as the Stars put up a 7 spot , the other 3 goals were by Bob, Dave (2nd of the night)  and the above mentioned goal by Hootsy . Tim. Doug. Jack , and Gerry all had assists on the goals. There were 3 penalty’s whistled on the Stars the unlucky players were Gerry, Bob and Dave.
Tuesday the Stars meet up with the Caps at 8:30,  should be another good one,  see you there.
